DAY THREE - morning

This morning we got into groups and viewed webinars.  Our group viewed a webinar on math apps.  There were 6 webinars in total and here are the notes I took down as each group presented there favourite apps from their webinar:

Webinars

1) Physical Access to Mobile Devices
  • Write Pad
    • converts writing to text
    • circle word date and the date will come up
  • Dragon Dictation
    • you have articulate to make sure it types what you say
    • 3 to 5 times faster than typing
    • dictate status updates to facebook and twitter
    • not for every student, have to ability to verbalize, have ideas, etc to use it
  • Touch Trainer
    • helps you learn how to use a touch screen
    • issues with fine motor skills, toddlers, etc
    • 7 different levels
    • target selection and cause and effect development
    • set it to touch or swipe

2) Executive Function  
  • Sock Puppets
    • talk into and sock puppets move their mouths
    • good for reader's theatre
    • be good for people with speech delays to get them talking, and it's fun
    • records
  • Shredder
    • type in negative thoughts and it shreds them
    • helps with being able to let go, cope and move on
  • Let Panic Go
    • scripted, no settings
    • no sound/private
    • helps with people who are having a panic attack; anxiety
    • hole to inhale, let go to exhale (follow the leaf)
    • rate how you feel at a certain point
3) Early Learning
  • Kiddie Question
    • building language, early vocab, and problem solving skills
    • gives a questions, give you time to say the answer, and click to get the answer
    • you can choose a specific "wh" question, or all.
  • Bugs and Buttons
    • a bunch of activities (ex: pinch and grab, gets into sorting, recycling, etc)
    • helps develop fine motor skills
    • reward is earn bugs to put in your scrapbook
  • Jib Jab
    • take a picture with your camera and put picture in
    • kids faces into the picture library and choose for a story and animation (ex: make a pizza)
    • it doesn't read aloud
4) Communication
  • Sign 4 Me
    • great way to teach sign language as well as speak to someone who uses sign language
    • 11,500 words, you can bank phrases for future use
  • Speech Tutor
    • shows how to form the sounds of words, parts of words, etc
    • shows different views, shows tongue/palate/lips - use camera as well
5) Math
  • Symmetry Shuffle
    • spatial sense and problem solving
    • math enjoyment
    • transformations/symmetry
  • Money Count
    • count Canadian money
    • timed (3, 5, 10 seconds)
    • customize coins to count
  • Number Line
    • uses base of 20 on the number line
    • get progress emailed to teacher or parent
    • 2 chances to tap on correct number
    • choose different number lines, including negative number and decimal numbers (to the 100th place)
  • Math.
    • search within app (ex: algebra)
    • video lessons
  • Math Dictionary
    • cognitive credit cards
    • speak aloud
  • Math Terms
    • descriptors to go along
  • Khan Academy
    • video lessons for junior/high school
    • many subjects
    • also online
6) Free Apps in Special Education
  • Pocket Pond
    • sensory regulation, calming
    • add things to the pond
    • good for transitions (sensory overload)
  • Science 360
    • 100s of videos or still pictures
    • no text
    • good for visual learners
    • engineering and science topics, always being updated
  • Tour Wrist
    • 2002 People's Choice App of the Year
    • visual tours of panoramic views around the world
    • anyone can add to it with pictures
    • enhance interest
